This week we welcome our friend (and former podcast guest)  Seth Kubersky back to share the latest from our favourite Orlando theme parks.

Seth is the author of The Unofficial Guide to Universal Orlando 2021 and is an avid theme park visitor. 

If you are not aware of these guide books, they offer a wealth of advice. This one, is based around Universal Orlando and has touring advice and exclusively patented, field-tested touring plans that save hours of standing in line in a single day. The guide book is packed with detailed, specific information on every ride, show, and restaurant in the resort. Their Walt Disney World guide will be out soon - so keep looking for it!

318 Seth Kubersky's Guide to Universal Orlando Re-opening

On this week's show, we celebrate BBC television coming back on the air - after World War 2 and share the Disney connection to this, remember the birthdate of a Disney Legend and welcome back to the show Seth Kubersky to talk about the next level of theme park openings in Orlando.  

Mickey's Gala Performance
On 7th June 1946, British Broadcasting Company came back on air following World War 2 and on this day in history, this cartoon was shown. 

It was directed by Burt Gillett, produced by Walt Disney and the music was by Frank Churchill. It was originally released on 1st July 1933 and runs for seven minutes, twenty-one seconds. What makes this special is that this feature was the final item shown on the BBC on 1st September 1939 as it then stopped broadcasting.  

Milt Albright
Born on this day in 1916, Milt went on to be the first Disneyland employee.

We are joined once more by the travel writer - Seth Kubersky. He joins us to review opening day at Disney Springs and then in detail share his experiences of visiting Universal Orlando on their re-opening day. We end our discussion looking ahead to what we can anticipate when Walt Disney World starts to re-open from the 15th July 2020.

On show 315, Seth spoke about the parking and it appears to be running just as smoothly now the main theme parks are open.

As he walked in, there were no park maps. He urges everyone to ensure they have the Universal Orlando app downloaded and ready to go prior to visiting.

He details the ride reservation system and shared the ease he found in obtaining on the day passes to ride his favourite attractions.

Mask compliance was good: all staff wore them however, he did see guests with lowered masks during his visits. Characters were able to be seen in the park but there were no photo opportunities and they wore themed/co-ordinating masks.

Top Tips:
Consider the ages of your family grouping - there isn't very much for younger children to do as they play areas are not currently opening. 
Travel light - lockers have been seeing a delay as much as 30 minutes to store and then to retrieve items. 
Arrive early and once in the are you should be able to obtain your first ride reservation 15 minutes prior to park opening.

Disney Dream Girls 210 - EPCOT Future World Tour

Welcome to the show notes for the Disney Dream Girls Podcast, show number 210 for Sunday 20th May 2018. Coming up on this weeks show, we have our usual On The Week In Disney History feature as well as a review of EPCOTs Future World with our guests Kat and Lewis from the Dis Down Under Podcast. 

When we think about EPCOT we all immediately think of the stunning park icon. Well here are some facts you may or may not already know about our much loved Space Ship Earth.

It is a geodesic sphere that is supported by three pairs of 'legs'. Theoretically, there should be 11,520 isosceles triangles that make up the sphere however some of these are partialy on not even present due to doorways and such forth.

Inside the sphere, is the attraction Space Ship Earth. This attraction opened on 1st October 1982 and takes guests on a journey through how communication has evolved over the years. Guests sit two to a car and a narrator explains the advancements. There is even a photo op and the opportunity at the end of the attraction to send a postcard home!

Another big draw to the future world part of the park is the pavilions of The Seas and Land. Both house attractions but I must admit you will find the longer queues inside the Land! Here you will find Soarin and Living with the Land. Over in the Seas you will find a very cute dark ride called The Seas with Nemo and Friends and an interactive show called Turtle Talk with Crush.

Near to the Land pavilion you will find Journey into Imagination. This is an attraction where you explore how imagination should be set free and you guide for the experience is a purple and orange dragon called Figment.

Innoventions is a practical area where edutainment can happen. From displays and hands on opportunities it is a great place for families to explore scientific principles together.

Finally, down to the last two attractions: Test Track and Mission Space.  Test Track is gives the rider the opportunity to create their own vehicle and then test it (under a range of driving conditions) against other guests in the vehicle. This is a must do as it has a top speed of just over 60mph.

Finally, Mission Space offers the opportunity to become an astronaut on a mission beyond the earth! The attraction has two options: orange and green. Green is a less intense option and gives views (from the spacecraft) of icons around the world whereas orange is very intensive and ends with a landing on Mars. It is a centrifugual spinner attraction and it is advised to follow the health warnings given.

Disney Dream Girls 105 - Making a Splash with an Imagineer

Coming up in todays show, we are joined by former Disney Imagineer - Terri Hardin. Terri shares another set of tales from her days in imagineering but also she answers some of our listeners questions.

Firstly, Terri tells about the time when she was involved in a stage version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Tiffany Theatre. I include this because on 30th April 2016, Jayne and I should have been seeing this show together... however, I will be having knee surgery and Jayne will end up enjoying the show with her husband Simon.

Then we move on to talk about Splash Mountain. Terri explains what parts of the Walt Disney World attraction and Tokyo Disneyland version she worked on as well as sharing some interesting behind the scenes stories.

First, we would like to share an email with you. Michelle and Jayne. I was hoping you would help me as I am going to Disneyland for the first time in 6 years. I am on a limited budget so I plan to try and eat lots of snacks. Can you advise what I should try? Eric from Wisconson. Well, curiously we also received a message via Facebook from Julian from Bromsgrove, as he and his family are going to Walt Disney World and they are wanting us to recommend our top five snacks. So here goes with the information we shared on the podcast.

Lets start with Walt Disney World: 

• Downtown Disney does offer some cheap options and I recommend the Earl of Sandwich Brownie Sandwich. This is two of the most delicious brownies filled and sandwiched together with creamy, sugary and delicious vanilla, chocolate or peanut butter frosting. This is available in Disneyland and WDW.

• EPCOT is a fabulous place to graze and get great snacks at a reasonable price – some are quite generous and can be shared! However, we recommend visiting France and Norway. Firstly, in France you will find the Napoleon. This pastry is topped with a thick layer of icing it has layers of flaky, buttery pastry are with thick, rich vanilla custard cream in between. My local Greggs do one and they are delish! Its available at Les Halles Boulangerie & Pâtisserie for $4.25 And as you are in France, don’t forget the Artisan d’Glace ice cream brioche sandwich for $4. Next stop we mentioned was Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe for their $3 school bread or the rice cream for $2.69.  

• Now to the Magic Kingdom and on the edge of Fantasyland, almost Tomorrowland, there is a kiosk called Cheshire Cafe and they serve up a Gourmet Cake Cup but it is de-constructed and is basically layers of cake sweet cake and frosting with chocolate decoration on top. This runs in at just under $5.

• Quick mention for the carrot cake cookie from Writers Stop at DHS.
• Talking of cupcakes, WDW does offer the most amazing array of choices in both parks and resort hotels. From Red velvet to peanut butter, these $5 (or so) treats are very shareable. So try these!

Now lets move to Disneyland:

• Maurices’s treats offer a range of twists from the cheddar garlic to the strawberry or chocolate one and are around the $4 mark.

• Edelweiss snacks in Disneyland have the chilli lime corn on the cob which it great value for just under $5.
• Another great snack is available from the Harbour galley – just near The Haunted Mansion. They do a range of jacket potatoes from around the $7 price point and you can choose from BBQ chicken, bacon and sour cream and shrimp salad. Awesome carb loading for the days where you are hitting the park for a long day. 

Next question is about budgets and this is from Clare in Penkridge. I’m going to WDW for the first time. I do not know what expenses I should reasonable expect. I have park tickets and I am staying at an off site hotel and expect to spend three days in WDW (1 MK, 1 DAK/EPCOT and 1 DHS). Can you advise?

This is difficult as everyone has different spending habits and at the end of the day you could manage on around $20 a day but you could aos quite easily spend $400! But here are a few guidelines:

• Biggest expense is food. If you eat breakfast off site you only have to purchase two meals in park. So I would budget $35-40 a day providing you are not having any sit down table service meals. This figure sounds high but includes buying water as hydration is important. Remember can bring water in with you too. I buy the small concentrate juice bottles and add that to water bottle or water fountain re-fills.
• Souvenirs range from a few dollars upwards. I like to post myself a postcard, also maybe buy a pin with the year or season on. You can spend $$ on this section so set yourself a budget!
• Ride photos, tend to be a pricey option but if you get one take and you love it, it will set you back around $17. If you want ten or more of such photos or character pictures, Disney do Photopass and in WDW it is around $170 but occasionally you can find vouchers to get it a bit cheaper.
• Things such as headache tablets, sun cream and plasters can be bought inside the park but are expensive. Take your own.
• How are you going to pay for goods? It may seem irrelevant if you live in the USA but as you are from the UK us overseas visitors need to plan ahead as most credit cards charge additional transaction costs for converting currency. I always take currency and a pre-payment card that I load with US dollars prior to my trip.
• Final cost - cell phone use. At Walt Disney World there is wifi in the parks and most hotels offer this free of charge. However, texting and calls if not done via the internet can be costly and leave you with a nasty surprise 3/4 weeks post holidays. For UK guests, the mobile network Three off the ability to take your package with you for no additional cost, where as Vodafone charge £5 a day! So check up on this. In Disneyland, there is no in park wifi. So unless you visit a Disney hotel or certain establishments at Downtown Disney you will have to wait until you return to your hotel.
