Welcome to the show notes for the Disney Dream Girls Podcast, show number 348, for Sunday 24th January 2021.

If you want to listen, whilst reading these notes, just click the player below or alternatively find us on iTunes, Libsyn, Stitcher Radio, or any good podcast catching apps. This week, we are joined by previous guest, prolific Disney author and friend of Michelle's - Jim Korkis

Jim is the author of an array of Disney titles from his hugely popular Vault of Walt series (now on edition 9), to those about Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Walt Disney and now the Disney Cruise Line.
His next book should be out shortly and is a mix of tales from the Adventurers Club as well as the mythical jungles of Walt Disney World so keep a look out in your usual bookstore!

So what does Jim talk about on the show? Well, he reveals the story of how Walt came to enlist in the Red Cross Ambulance Corps; this to many will be a well-known fact. However, did you know in September of 1918 Walt became very ill and was returned to the family home in Chicago?

Jim shares all the details on the show including stories of Walt's friendships, recovery and enterprising nature. There are also further details and pictures of Walt's time in the Red Cross available here Red Cross Archives.

Another story Jim shared was the story of the second inauguration parade of a former president of the United States of America and how it took place in Walt Disney World but you will have to listen in for details. I found this D23 post, which details some of the other connections the Disney company has to American presidents here.

Disney Dream Girls 185 - Jim Korkis Talks

Welcome to the show notes for the Disney Dream Girls podcast show number 185 aired on Sunday 12th November 2017. If you wish to listen to the podcast, whilst reading this blog, all you have to do is click on the audio player below. Alternatively, our podcast can be found in most places that host podcasts such as iTunes (click here to subscribe) and Stitcher Radio.

We welcome to the podcast Disney historian, author, former friend of Merlin and Disney Cast Member - Jim Korkis.
Michelle and Jim at the Polynesian Resort
During her August 2017 trip, Michelle was incredibly fortunate to spend several hours in the company of Jim Korkis to chat about all things Disney. As the recording lasted around an hour and a half, it has been split up into different segments.
Polynesian Resort - Photo Credit WDW Website

We start this segment, by discussing the Kukui Nut Tree, that can be found at the Polynesian Resort. This tree was given to the resort by a former guest as a symbol of protection and peace. To find the tree, you need to go to the Great Ceremonial House and hopefully the picture below will help you.

Whilst this tree no longer has the signage, it is a prominent part of the resort and I urge you to go track it down.

The nut from the tree was traditionally used as a light source. So as a nod to this, members of management at the resort (and also at Aulani) wear lei made of Kukui Nuts as this symbolises that they light the way for other cast members.

Another discussion topic was the Disney/Beatles link. Did you know that John Lennon was actually staying at the Polynesian Resort when he signed the contract to disband the band?

Then we move on to discuss the lagoon show and how it evolved into the Main Street Electrical Parade.

We hope you enjoyed the show, next week will be reviewing the Christmas offerings in the USA Disney theme parks but we will be back with other selected highlights from Jim in the very near future.

Away from the news, the girls share more of the recording Michelle made with Jim Korkis. This time, Jim talks about the historical artefacts you can see and appreciate at The Wilderness Lodge Resort as well as some details on the resorts history. Additionally, as usual with Jim, other topics are included such as the Carousel at the Boardwalk Resort.
Wilderness Lodge Lobby
Jim is a Disney historian and author and we can't praise his books highly enough. So if you haven't as yet, why not buy one and give it a read!

After the interview, Michelle and Jayne discuss the delicious trio of waffles available at Roaring Forks (the counter service at Wilderness Lodge - just off the main lobby). Whilst Michelle had the strawberry version, there is also a chocolate chip and a delicious bananas foster version. It is well worth a trip for a filling breakfast that is under $9.00.

Disney Dream Girls 128 - Main Street Electrical Parade Celebration

Welcome to the show notes for the Disney Dream Girls Podcast, show number 128 for Sunday 10th October 2016. As always, if you wish to listen now, whilst looking at these pictures, click on the player below.

On todays show, Michelle and Jayne look at some items of news that caught their eye and they give a reminder that on show 127 our listener Katie Mason (who ran the inaugural Disneyland Paris Half Marathon) kindly donated a prize of a celebratory Run Disney keyring. So if you want to win this amazing prize - give show 127 (last week) a listen to find out how!
The 9th October 2016 saw the very last performances of the Main Street Electrical Parade in the Magic Kingdom. This iconic parade debuted in 1972 at Disneyland It was created by Bob Jani and the project director was Ron Miziker. Fear not, there are still chances to see the parade as it is 'going home' to Disneyland before it totally goes away.
To honour this parade we spoke with Disney historian and author - Jim Korkis and take great delight to share his musings about the parades origins. For those of you who are not aware of Jim, he is the author of the Vault of Walt series of books. But he has written many more and we urge you, if you are a Disney history fan, to read them.
